Catherine's Books

The Hospital by the River
A Story of Hope

This is Catherine’s well known best-seller.  It is highly readable. There are accounts of meetings with Emperor Haile Selassie – a great supporter of the hospital - and of the frightening events of the revolution which overthrew him.  There are numerous stories of difficulties faced and overcome.

Above all there are moving stories of women who, having suffered the pain and shame of fistula injuries, are restored to live a normal life once more.  It is indeed “A Story of Hope.”

The book is available from major booksellers in New Zealand, or can be ordered from the Hamlin Trust New Zealand.  It is now available in a slimmed-down paperback edition for $25.

Catherine’s Gift

The release of this book coincides with the 50 year jubilee of Catherine’s work in Ethiopia.  The author is John Little, who helped Catherine write her autobiography, “The Hospital by the River.”

It is a record of his numerous interviews with fistula patients and hospital staff and shows the far-reaching impact of Catherine’s compassion and commitment.

There is considerable detail about the technical aspects of fistula surgery, especially regarding the minority of patients for whom a complete cure is difficult or unachievable. $35.
