More Knitted Blankets Sent

Marty Van Der Burg, of Auckland, has taken a huge bundle of blankets with him on his latest visit to Ethiopia.

Marty, an Auckland builder, has visited Ethiopia several times on construction projects.  He has built houses there for Habitat for Humanity and he was also responsible for building the replacement housing for the people relocated from the site where the Hamlin Midwifery School now stands.

Marty is an enthusiastic supporter of the work of the fistula hospitals so he always takes blankets with him.  This time he has taken 100 kilograms of blankets.  Our thanks to Marty and to the women who knitted millions of stitches to make them.

Midwifery students spellbound by “A Walk to Beautiful"

Nine first-year midwifery students watched the DVD “A Walk to Beautiful” with their midwifery lecturer Ruth Martis at a dessert evening recently.

This documentary film (2009 Emmy Award) introduces the viewers to the issues of obstetric fistula, the patients and the work of Hamlin Fistula in Ethiopia. For 86 minutes the students all sat spellbound and in awe about the amazing work that has been done.

The midwifery students, who are enrolled at CPIT (Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology) gained an understanding of the crucial role of midwives in saving women from the horror of a fistula birth injury. They are keen to support the Hamlin Midwifery School and are hoping to establish regular contact with their Ethiopian counterparts.

Note:  “A Walk to Beautiful” is available from Hamlin Fistula NZ for showing to groups.
